According to the European Commission, the newly proposed European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs) aim to assist EU member states in strengthening their collective defence infrastructure. The initiative focuses on the joint development of critical military systems to enhance industrial cooperation across the bloc.
The proposal, announced on 3 July 2026, seeks to foster greater integration by encouraging countries to work together on major capability projects. By centralising efforts on these five large-scale ventures, the Commission intends to improve the efficiency and technological output of the European defence industry.
