The European Commission has announced its decision to refer Greece to the Court of Justice of the European Union due to discriminatory employment conditions for teachers within the country's public school system. According to the European Commission, the referral follows Greece's failure to bring national legislation into line with the Directive on fixed-term work, Council Directive 1999/70/EC.
The directive mandates that member states prohibit discrimination against fixed-term employees. The Commission stated that the existing Greek national rules do not currently meet these requirements, leading to the legal action taken on 8 July 2026.
