The European Commission has tabled a legislative proposal that would introduce a European preference rule for public procurement of strategic services. The draft aims to ensure that contracts for essential public functions are awarded first to companies based within the EU, strengthening the bloc’s internal market and safeguarding strategic sectors.
According to Euronews, the measure is directed at Chinese firms operating in an estimated €2 billion market each year. By excluding these companies from the preferred pool, the Commission seeks to limit non‑European influence in critical public‑service contracts while bolstering opportunities for domestic suppliers.
