BMW Oxford plant marks 25 years of Mini production

On April 26, 2026, the Mini plant in Oxford marked 25 years of continuous production under BMW Group ownership, a milestone underscored by the rollout of the 4,671,664th vehicle from its UK assembly lines since 2001.

The anniversary coincides with a community-focused vintage car event at the Cowley site this weekend, where the plant joins the National Drive It Day initiative to celebrate three decades of automotive history at the location: 50 years of the Rover SD1, 40 years of the Rover 800, and 25 years of the modern Mini, all manufactured at the same factory.

Organiser Tanya Fields, who has hosted similar events in Cowley since 2014, emphasized the accessibility of the gathering, noting it welcomes classic car enthusiasts, local residents, and both current and former plant employees, with free refreshments and opportunities to explore the factory’s dedicated museum chronicling Mini production.

According to BMW (UK) Manufacturing Ltd CEO Markus Grüneisl, the milestone reflects not only industrial output but the human element behind it, crediting the workforce’s creativity, expertise, and pride as central to Mini’s enduring appeal and global success.

The Oxford plant’s diversity is highlighted in the 25 facts unveiled for the anniversary, revealing representation from 64 nationalities among employees, alongside the production of 26 special edition models and exports to over 100 countries worldwide.

Production remains robust, with the two UK sites—Oxford and Swindon—employing more than 3,000 people and delivering approximately 800 Minis daily; at Plant Oxford alone, a new vehicle completes the line every 78 seconds.

The Swindon facility contributes precision-engineered body panels, while since 2006, BMW Group’s Hams Hall plant in North Warwickshire has supplied engines for Oxford-built Minis, totaling over 4.6 million units to date and reinforcing the vehicle’s all-British production narrative.

Beyond manufacturing, the Oxford plant has evolved into a community landmark, attracting over 17,500 visitors for guided tours in 2025 alone, adding to its 113-year presence in the local area.

Lauren Hart, a communications specialist at the Oxford plant, shared a personal connection to the milestone, stating her favourite model is the convertible—she drives a red one with black stripes on the bonnet—and noting she will turn 25 just two weeks after the anniversary, calling it “full circle” after her first car was also a Mini.

The National Drive It Day event, rooted in the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs’ 2005 initiative, aligns annually with the anniversary of the 1900 One Thousand Mile Trial, this year directing donations toward the NSPCC’s Childline Service, with organizers encouraging attendees to contribute online or onsite.

Fields added that the plant’s sustained support for the event makes it unique among UK manufacturing sites, fostering rare collaboration between industry and local heritage preservation.
