How the pathway will work

NHS Wales is developing a national pathway for diabetes psychology to offer people quick access to specialist support.

How the pathway will work

The pathway aims to provide support in various formats including online programmes, individual therapy, and crisis care. We see being developed by a lead within the NHS Wales performance and improvement unit. The service is designed to suit individual needs of people living with diabetes.

Why this support is needed

People with diabetes are twice as likely to experience depression according to Diabetes UK. Shared symptoms between diabetes and depression can make seeking support more difficult. Mental health struggles such as feeling low in mood, anxious or stressed are common among those managing the condition.

What formats will the support include?

The support will include online programmes, individual therapy, and crisis care.

Who is leading the development of this pathway?

A lead within the NHS Wales performance and improvement unit is developing the national pathway for diabetes psychology.
