Rivian Confirms Tornado Damages Illinois Factory Used for R2 EV Parts Storage

Rivian Automotive’s factory in Normal, Illinois, sustained roof and wall damage from a tornado on Friday, the company confirmed in an internal message to employees.

CEO RJ Scaringe said the affected area, Building 2, was being used for parts storage and logistics for the upcoming R2 electric vehicle, a key model expected to launch this spring.

The National Weather Service classified the tornado as EF1 with peak winds of 100 mph, part of a broader outbreak across the upper Midwest.

Scaringe stated that operations in the damaged section are expected to resume this week, while the plant’s assembly lines remain operational.

No injuries were reported, according to a company spokeswoman, and Scaringe emphasized employee safety as the immediate priority.

The R2 is positioned as a more affordable, high-volume EV intended to broaden Rivian’s market reach beyond its current R1T pickup and R1S SUV lineup.

Rivian has been ramping up production at the Normal facility to meet growing demand and improve margins amid intense competition in the EV sector.

The company delivered 13,982 vehicles in the first quarter of 2026, a 22% increase year-over-year, according to its latest earnings report.

Analysts note that any disruption to R2 preparations could affect Rivian’s ability to scale production and achieve profitability targets later this year.

How the tornado impacted Rivian’s R2 launch preparations

The damaged area in Building 2 was specifically allocated for staging components and managing logistics for the R2, which relies on a simplified platform to reduce costs and complexity.

Scaringe said assessments are underway and more information will be shared as it becomes available, but the timeline for full restoration remains unclear.

While the assembly lines were unaffected, any delay in parts flow could indirectly slow final vehicle output if storage buffers are compromised.

What Rivian says about recovery and operations

The company confirmed that major production zones, including body shop and paint facilities, continue to function without interruption.

Scaringe thanked employees for their resilience and reiterated that supporting the workforce is the top concern following the event.

Rivian plans to provide updates through internal channels and will disclose further details publicly when appropriate.

Was anyone injured in the tornado at Rivian’s factory?

No injuries were reported, according to a company spokeswoman and CEO RJ Scaringe’s message to employees.

When does Rivian expect the damaged area to reopen?

Scaringe said operations in the damaged section are expected to resume this week, pending ongoing safety assessments.
